TYPE SPECIMEN
Type Exploration | Book Design
Futura is a simple, clean, Sans serif typeface invented by Paul Renner. It Widely known as one of the more notable typefaces ever created, right up with Helvetica and Avenir. So much so that people have begun getting tired of its usage everywhere. That being said, it's popular for a reason, be it that it has almost perfect geometry. The end goal for this idea was to be a smaller book accompanied by a larger poster showing off the capabilities and the simplistic beauties of the typeface. Without over designing, it was to find a way of how to balance information, fun design, and incorporate some sort of context to bring it all together.

Outcome
As a film lover, one of the first things I picked up on when doing research was that the typeface was used for the posters and commercial material for '2001: A Space Odyssey' as it was the film maker - Stanley Kubrik's favorite typeface. Interestingly enough it's used in a commemorative plaque on the moon. Needless to say, I was sold on the theme. It was a real struggle trying to keep the focus on the beauty of the typeface and not the context of the film but in the end comes out as a perfect balance between the two.
