HISTORY OF MANGA

Type Exploration | Book Design | Publication Design

Manga is an expressive form of storytelling originating in Japan as early as the 12th Century in scrolls containing illustrations of animals titled Choju Giga (Scrolls of Frolicking Animals.) Today, Manga has a very large cultural significance, even creating major influences the likes of which, western audiences took a liking to. The goal behind this project was to promote a few specific types of papers from the paper company Neenah. Using such paper surely could not be a waste to print on so when coming up with a subject matter, the idea had to have the ability of showing off just how well the paper prints rich blacks, vibrant colors, etc.

Outcome

The finished product is a minimalist hardcover book focused on the history of manga and its cultural significance for several hundred years. The book shows off the paper's ability to reproduce what is on a computer screen without flaw. Every aspect to the print is crisp, including the die cuts and perforations.
